The restored remains of the Rüsselsheim Fortress have become the new home of the city’s municipal museum. The museum first opened in the 1970s and has now been completely rebuilt.

A new staircase leads the visitors to the upper floor where they reach the main exhibition room. A newly added rooflight supplies ample daylight.

We chose a limited number of different materials for this project. Next to the historic natural stone masonry we added an oak floor. Furthermore, we kept new structural elements in a simplistic white, while using dark gray painted steel for technical additions such as the elevator, doors and the main staircase.

The architectural design makes the old house a perfect host for the new exhibition.

更值得注意的是這首歌的歌詞，其實訴說著燕姿4年來的心路歷程。
歌詞的前半段描述當時間是填滿的，心卻是空的，「我想笑我想愛想奔跑想擁抱」，唯有停住時間、放下一切，讓心自由去追尋它想要的，才能真的快樂。
後半段則是描寫在放下之後，學會了不完美的美，心跳聲再度催促自己：「有夢去追」，於是再度起飛，隨風旋轉唱著歌；與過去不同的是，經歷過停滯的時間，去笑、去愛、去奔跑、去擁抱，心語會告訴自己要的是什麼，這一次心是自由的，是真正快樂的。
這首歌取名為「世說心語」，正是燕姿要向世人訴說心裡的語言，將外人看似停滯的這4年心中的體悟唱給大家聽。

在這首歌裡，燕姿特別節選了一位印度女詩人 Sarojini Naidu 的詩作"Life"，在歌曲中唸誦為背景聲音。這位女詩人與印度聖雄甘地同期，具有政治家、女權運動者、印度的南丁格爾與印度獨立運動的自由鬥士等多重身分，是印度第一個任國大黨主席的婦女、第一位擔任邦行政長官的偉大女性。燕姿節選的詩句大意是說：「除非你力戰過悲傷與恐懼，承受過讓你夢想破滅的年歲，因劇烈的慾望而受傷、因衝突傾軋而疲憊不堪，孩子啊，你不算真正的活過：這就是人生。」這段詩句有如弦外之音，增添了「世說心語」的思考深度。
燕姿想要藉「世說心語」告訴大家：這4年，燕姿已經與自己打了一仗，過去所有人生的經歷，都在時間裡沈澱，化成了音樂的養分，滋長出新的生命，唱出全心的歌聲。

I seldom urge people to subscribe a certain artist on Youtube. TheBathroomGirl is special. And so his her new original song, "Restless." 100% of the selling(buy it! It's just $1.5 USD) of this Single will be donated to the "Restless Beings" organization to stop street children spreading and continuing expose themselves in pornography, prostitution, child labour and human trafficking. Their first stop was in South Asia, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Watch with me, some of the kids and what they've been through in their young age and what their skinny little arm and body had been through.

Sustainable Motivation - Serve the People in Need

For those who've read this blog for some time, know that it's mostly about spacial design, but I want to talk about something different today. Sustainable motivation from the much deserved people in need.

You've might know that I've been struggling to find direction towards my dreams. Exciting, but not easy. I've been working for almost 6 days a week and going to school after work for 2 nights on the weekday, and 1 full day on the weekend. Today, I woke up with the tiredest feeling on the physical body, and my mind urging for more sleep. Then when arrived to the office, I came across this video introducing a man called Valentine Abe and his work in Haiti on providing, educating, and self-supporting people in Haiti to farm their own fish. What a timely rain! There are people out there, fighting for their beloved, for a good deed, and haven't give up! I'm not giving up, and more, I'm not alone.

Lets keep on walking.

I came across swissmiss around noon today, not sure what I should expect, but this speech caught me, caught me big time. I'm currently on the ground in between design news, starting a business, gaining financial knowledge for my personal and hopefully my own business life. And how this speech(March 2010 CreativeMornings) connects to me is, Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, the founder of Apartment Therapy, the (possibly) no.1 design blog that brings solutions(cure) for homes, where he started and how he's doing it from an interior designer, elementary school teacher, physically going to people's homes to solve problems, and now as a company of 13 full-time staff blogging and streaming readers solutions upon their homes. I have to say that it was worth the 46 minute listening(working at the same time) to Maxwell's life journey, knowing that everything has a start and is there for a reason. You can be inspired by a photograph for minutes or hours, but you could be influenced by a person sharing its own story for a life time. I'm encouraged by few quote in particular.

"...because when you work with people very closely everyday, you learn far more than you can give to those people that you're working with...."

"Again, service be of value."

"It's a problem. It's an opportunity."

"If you get up every morning and you know you're meeting your mission, and you're doing what you set out to do, which is in my case, to help people with their homes, that's very centering.....as long as you have that focus....if you ever get off track....you get overwhelmed, but you don't get lost."

The last one is my favorite. The following one came from Maxwell's brother, who's the professional media guy that encouraged all this to happen.

"People have problems. If you can solve their problem, you have a business. But you have to be very specific. You have to figure out what people really really need. If you could stand on that pain point, where there's a sense of pain, and you can bring a solution to it, you will be IN business. That is all you need to do. And that's not easy to do, but that is the focus."

There's just jewels everywhere in this video. I actually listened to it twice to really get it IN my mind, and I know how some of my readers find the content that I share are very broad and general, almost as if this is not a blog but a magazine introducing a mash of design stuff, they want articles that are more personal. I acknowledge that, the reason/explanation this blog is the way it has been for the past year or so is partly of time manner, and partly because, I do find the things I find and share on this blog personal. So to stretch this more, I thought I could share small notes in each post I do. So I hope this connects to you more, as these content do connect with me one way or another, and I really enjoy sharing with whoever is out there reading, so I hope you like the change I've made and I appreciate and welcome your ideas and comments in the future.

Will Aspinall and Neil Lambeth together discovered a whole new way to tick the world. The Aspiral Clock uses a ball climbing up the hill of a spiral towards the center to display time. Once the ball reaches the center of the clock, it drops into a hole and falls out at the bottom of the clock and starts from 12 o'clock all over again. Brilliant! Alessi Italian Design Factory designed this modern cubic mortar with black with a twist. Literally, a twist on the holding section. Although I love the look of the shape, I'm guessing this shape is less practical than a round mortar.

belgian firm label architecture recently completed 'fiat lux' a renovation of a townhouse

in brussels. the transformation of the 270 meters squared residence included using

the elements of transparency, reflections and connections between the differents levels.

from the first floor, the stairwell is entirely empty. at each level, glazed windows were

installed, creating the dividing walls. some of them are pierced with little round openings,

allowing inhabitants to communicate from a level to another one. behind the windowpanes,

the platforms, transitions spaces, were covered by OSB stain in black, creating a mirror

effect to those who look at them from the opposite openings. in front of these openings,

mirrors were installed on the blind attached wall.

What is "an eye for design"? / Blogging Tips

Many of you who know me or have been following my blog might notice I've been posting lots of design-related articles here, a very large proportion of them are articles from other design websites or blogs. Despite the immature and probably respectfulness of just re-posting other peoples effort onto my blog (I feel guilty about it, I really do), what I'm really trying to do is to develop "an eye for design." But what is an eye for design anyway? sometimes I wonder.

I first heard this term about two years ago while I was in New York watching the television, the interior design show host used this to describe a designer that designed a fabulous, colorful, and fun patio. I started observing people that are publicly known that has "a great eye for design." While this term is, to me, extremely abstract. Is "this eye" something you get by nature? Or is this something you could obtain through training? The only thing I know at that time is, I really want that "eye" in order to design something like that fabulous patio.

A few years later, I'm digging hundreds(literally) posts everyday to hopefully to somehow get closer to this magical "eye." Until today, I still don't know if I'm on the right path. For record purposes, I started, about in mid March, to email whatever I see and think it's worth keeping to my blogger and automatically post it in my blog. With the amount of articles I read everyday, even the best of the best picks would reach 20 something posts each day, and that, in my experienced-RSS-reading opinion, is too much. I would probably unsubscribe my own blog with that many daily.

About a week ago, March 30th to be exact, I got a letter from an editor I respect highly, Mr. Guido from Chair Blog, a blog I faithfully read. He invited me to be a contributor to his blog! I said YES of course! It's just too good for me! Not only because the quality and dignified work he's put into this blog, but also the fact that Mr. Guido was also a person with design-unrelated background and with his passion plus the advantage of traveling need of his normal job, he built up his eye for design and the reputable Happy Hotelier Blog. I'm so eager to learn more and more from respectful people like him. Some day, I want to meet the designers I'd admired and inspired me to pursue this dream of becoming an interior designer, such as Candice Olson, famous for her design show Divine Design.

Back to Chair Blog excitement. So after my first post on Chair Blog introducing the Lox barstool, I found out that I have MUCH to learn. There are some important and some basic blogging tips Guido taught me that I find it so useful, I want to list it out, perhaps it'll be helpful to other bloggers.

Always try to have photos on the post itself and not a referencing it from another site. Some sites have anti leech installed and would block linkage from external sites.
Give photos their proper name together with the proper name of the respective creator(designer/author/photographer), that way you get more search engine generated traffic via the photo search funcionality of Google or Bing.
Remove the URL on the photo if they're just pointing to the same page.
If the text is complete from another site, put blockquote signs around them.
Always check your post in main types of browsers(IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari...) before calling finish, make sure the layout is exactly how you want it to be.
Don't make the photo size too big, this'll save storage space on the hosted server.

There might be more tips among this topic, I've been reading books about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and some of the principals are essentially the same. I'm looking to add some more to the list above while I read some more.

From now on, I'll be using the "share" function in Google Reader for awesome posts I see on the web, while this doesn't violate copyrights and licenses of others, it also emphasizes the fact that I only want to SHARE the find of a good design and NOT TO COPY it as my own. You'll be able to read my Sharings either by following my Buzz inside my Google Profile page, or simply subscribe to my Google Reader Public Sharings(RSS). I'll inject more originality and personal discovery that are related to design into this blog, and hopefully share some drawings and design of my own with you in the future.

Thanks for reading my blog. It really means a lot to me. I want to somehow find a way to build up/establish this magical eye for design and at the same time, share the built result with people around the world, so that people could come to my place and find the traces and records of designers and design works altogether. That's what I want this place to be.

GAD, an architecture company with offices in New York, Istanbul and Bodrum completed an impressive renovation project in Beykoz, a suburb of Istanbul, Turkey. The BUAMA House belongs to a young couple who needed their home restructured. The plan was to insert a new living space in the already existing one. The results are amazing. Here are a few words on the project from the architects: "The new structure maintains the existing heights, yet proposes a more organic solution. The smooth and endless lines reference infinite space, as there is no clear distinction between the floors & walls, or between the walls & ceiling. Light scatters on the organic surface in a way that seems almost limitlessness. The furniture is selectively chosen to unite many different styles." We think the renovation is daring, original and totally goes with an exotic country like Turkey.

This complex apartment design seems to counterweight the crazy and chaotic lifestyle of this particular USA region. The flat features an interesting terrace of impressive dimensions, a place of relaxation and promising outdoor parties. Interiors are airy and spacious. The living-room houses an interesting white bookcase and a dining area. Original looking wooden stairs connect the flat with the upper terrace. The building is conceived as a new element that connects the campus of the University (Universidad de Los Andes), concentrating uses and flows from these parts to the building. It aims to integrate pedestrian through places like the access plaza and the first floor gallery. The mixed use of parking and postgraduate classrooms is represented in its pure and forceful geometry which clearly expresses this duality through the materials used in the façade, which permits to low the impact of the building in the area as a transition of uses between housing and mixed uses of the university.

The concept of terrace garden is presented on the upper floors of the building in which the interior spaces open to gardens and contemplation areas, which integrating the visual mountains and the city, makes this project a great place to stay.

Architect Pieter Weijnen’s tall, skinny blue house stands on Steigereiland, one of seven artificial islands dredged from Amsterdam’s IJ Lake in IJburg, the city’s most recent urban expansion plan

Sustainable use of energy is a leading principle for this residence on Steiger Island. The large façade facing south allows a lot of light and heat. Except for the CO2 driven ventilation, the cooling system is inspired by old Arabian cooling towers. Air from the house is pumped into an underground pipe from which the cooled air will be led back to the house. A Solior warm water collector provides 50% of the tap water. Rain water is re-used for the toilet and washing machine. The building is constructed in wood and recycled materials. The beams in the façade are old bollards from the IJ lake. The copper plates on the suspended living room are from a church roof.

The assignment was to design a volume containing two identical single-family housing programs. In addition to solving the needs presented by the client, we offered the possibility that eventually the two houses could be transformed into one, thus contemplating a broader adaptation to future needs. Reformulating the commission sought to project a two-family detached housing.

The site is located in Los Peñascales, a housing development located between two small towns in the mountains north of Madrid, to mid-slope in a terrain that descends to the south, coinciding with the best views of Mount Brown and the skyline and distant from the city. In the plot there were no trees that respect, only shrubs and native vegetation, but included two large granite boulders, which features of the area be incorporated as an element of the house.

The house is organized into three levels: the first, half buried, almost hidden, solve the encounter with the slope and generates a shaded place where to leave the vehicles, the second shows the area to be completely the landscape through its enclosure Glass finally the third level houses the bedrooms on the lower floor generates two porches on each end and an overhang that allows the entry of sunlight in winter and protected from impact during the hot summer months.

The household items are associated with each other to reduce the furniture to a single item that solves the ground floor storage, kitchen, sitting room and entrance windbreak. On the first floor all the closets are concentrated in a single strip attached to the facade improvement thermal conditions of the house.

iluma has a facade of jewelled polycarbonate cells that glitter in the day and glow in the night

during our recent trip to singapore designboom discovered the iluma center, a ten-storey
shopping mall which is managed and owned by jack investment. the mall is located within
the bugis district and opened its doors on 28 march 2009.

the facade is a canvas for media artist to display their works

with a budget of SGD 100 million, the country's first urban entertainment centre is
targeted at the young professionals in their 20s and 30s. the mall is able to cater for
up to 60 – 80 thousand consumers on a daily basis.

the crystal mesh (CMesh) lends to the iluma building the ability
to dynamically express itself and to dynamically react to changing
activities within and to the urban surrounding. the installation,
which is identical with the building skin, aims to extend the architecture
and the building's inner activities.

by pure numbers, the CMesh installation is among the largest permanent
media facades, and also the first of its kind, in the world. by design, the
installations is singular as it aims at a new level of higher integration between
media and architecture. the CMesh has been developed in close collaboration
between WOHA architects (singapore), in charge of the general architecture of
the iluma complex and realities:united (berlin) in charge of the general concept
of the media installation, the design of the 'crystal' facade element system and
the concept of CMesh's authoring/ operating software.

the CMesh installation is equipped as a media installation and is made up of
thousands of individually controllable energy saving fluorescent light bulbs.

here, is an update of the israeli pavilion at shanghai expo 2010 designed by architect
haim z. dotan.

24 meters in height, the 1200 square meter pavilion is built on a 2000 square meter site
and its construction is nearing completion. the structure consists of two architectural curvilinear
forms which hug each other like two hands or two shells, symbolizing a quiet conversation
between man and earth, man and man, nation and nation. the pavilion continuously transforms
as the light changes during the day and night. the two hands / shells present the dialogue between
man and nature, past and future, temporality and eternity, earth and sky, substance and the virtual.
within the forms, are two architectural spaces, symbolizing the spirituality of the
ancient jewish nation.

when visitors first enter the main building of the pavilion, there will be multimedia showing
the history of jewish evolution, with a 15 m high screen displaying films which highlight the
country's innovative and technological achievements. this is called the 'hall of light'.

'field rupture' is a sculptural installation by veev design practice situated in the interior
courtyard garden of gillis residence in berkeley hills, california. the ground surface of
'field rupture' is overlaid by a topological system, which shifts and pushes up vertically
forcing the surface to 'rupture'. in doing this, the field turns into a figure of two planes
exerting force against each other.

polish designers rysard rychlicki and agnieska nowak of h3ar created a 100 m tall tower
with 400 sq. meters of floors for their proposal for the fashion museum in omotesando street,
tokyo. a feature of the building is its lines in the structure of the tower - a clear gesture of form.
considering the limited areas of storey's they decided to play around with the arrangement
and the type of function, to shape the mass of the building properly. they achieved our
objective by displacing formal communication passages within the tower to its left side.
its modular spatial arrangement defines the shape of the mass. the skeleton of the building
is wrapped with soft forms of stories. the module of a core communication has been shifted
axially by 10 degrees, thus causing full storey's to interconnect with mezzanines. the skeleton
of the building also consists of emergency routes, elevators, vertical pipelines and media
supply channels.

[found on Objekto] A scheming and attractive lamp. Manufactured from a single plastic band rolled up on it, the structure can be manipulated to change the form and the orientation of the light. The metal arches are equipped with small plastic parts making possible to uphold the lamp in various positions. The Eclipse lamp is delivered in a flat pack, similar to a “pizza box”.

'I just want to share my fascination for this modern building in an old town, very nice
but without architectural boldness. the metamorphose of an no man's land in a new area
is fascinating. the link between nature and the project was my first subject. but, rapidly,
I have been captivated by this original construction... I consider my 'work' as a 'chronique
visuelle buisonnière', a good way to explain what I tried to show.'

'bloom chair' by korean desinger eerang park, is constructed from eight folded steel plates.
each of these pieces are attached at a central point and fanned in a circular arrangement
at an angle of 35 degrees from each other. in this formation the plates lean up against one another,
maintaining a strong structure, in which they simultaneously function as the legs, seat, back
and armrests of the chair.

while mclaren is best known for their racing team and high performance sports cars, the company is setting the ambitious goal of producing the lowest carbon emissions per horsepower of any car on sale. the company is hoping to achieve this goals through a variety of measures including making their cars lighter to achieve better mileage and exploring hybrid powertrains. these goals may be executed through the use of more high-tech materials like carbon fibre and composites. while the company is being quiet on details but is hinting at innovative solutions. here is their new flagship car the MP4-12C, which boasts a 3.8-liter V8 producing 600 horsepower.

We would like to make "the most beautiful building" for the Museo de al Memoria de Andalucía (Andalusia's Museum of Memory) in Granada. The MA. A museum that wishes to transmit the entire history of Andalusia. As early as Roman times, Strabo described the inhabitants of Andalusia as "the most cultivated of the Iberians, who have laws in verse."

Our project for the MA is a building in line with the Central Headquarters of the CAJA GRANADA Savings Bank that we finished in 2001. We propose a podium building measuring 60×120 m and rising three stories, so that its upper floor coincides with the podium of the main CAJA GRANADA building. And its façade as well. Everything is arranged around a central courtyard, in elliptical form in which circular ramps rise, connecting the three levels and creating a very interesting spatial tension. The dimensions of the elliptical courtyard have been taken from the courtyard of the Palace of Charles the V in the Alhambra.

And to crown it all, as if it were a Gate to the City, a strong vertical piece emerges, the same height and width as the main building of the CAJA GRANADA. It thus appears before the highway that circles Granada as a screen-façade that sends messages over the large plasma screens that will cover it entirely. Like Piccadilly Circus in London or Times Square in New York.

And to finish the entire operation, a large horizontal platform all the way to the River, the MA open FIELD that will serve as a public space in that new area of the city of Granada.

Olithas: Studo Efra's Concrete Furniture

Studio Efra has developed a smart and clean way to use thin-slab concrete in furniture.

Olithas, whose title comes from a combination of the Spanish word for wave (Ola) and the Greek word for stone (Lithos), had the goal of making "stone-like slabs appear to be light and fluid like a wave." To do so, they cast ridges into the underside of thin slabs of concrete, which provides and organic visual element but also reinforces the structure of the entire piece. Additionally, the ridges are engineered to perfectly fit the legs, made from stainless steel rod: they fit perfectly in, and, with the weight of the concrete pieces, will likely need no further fastening (at least for normal use).

Portable burners are awesome for camping, but they do have their minor points like refilling gas and flames extinguishing during windy times. A good solution is using induction cooking stoves that are compact. The WrapStove here follows that norm and comes fitted with tiny magnets in the sleeve, to cling onto the vessel. It's a flexible thang that is fashioned like a rolled up towel and wraps around the cooking pot. It switches-on only when the end tab is folded and the temperature is set via a touchscreen.
Since camping also means cramping, the WrapStove scores beautifully in the portability sector and takes up very little space in your bag.
